Naked Nebula Reveals Astronomy's Colour Tricks

Naked Nebula Reveals Astronomy's Colour Tricks - It's possibly the mildest image of the Helix nebula you've ever seen. Pictures of nebulas frequently display their enormous forms in vivid hues, but that's because several views have been joint to yeild the final image.

The raw image below, taken by a device that images radiation at the La Silla observatory in Chile's Atacama desert, is fragmented into eight frames, each imaged by a altered detector. The gaps formed by the grid are typically filled in using images taken from somewhat different vantage points.

After a bit of processing to remove flaws, and by combining the monotone view with images shot through blue, green and red filters, the colour merged image below was shaped.

Filters are used to pick up light from definite gases because molecules of each gas imitates light of a dissimilar wavelength. The resulting image basically provides a colour-coded but representative understanding of the nebula's chemical make-up.
